Penerangan merupakan kebutuhan pokok di ruang. Sumber cahaya di ruang adalah lampu penerangan. Tujuan penerangan adalah untuk keamanan dan kenyamanan di ruang. Secara umum Lampu dinyalakan dan dipadamkan menggunakan saklar secara manual. Jika di ruang tidak ada penghuni, sebaiknya lampu dipadamkan sehingga tidak terjadi rugi daya dan umur lampu (life time) lebih lama. Supaya lampu padam dengan sendiri perlu dipasang sensor deteksi orang. Sensor tersebut adalah PIR. Sensor Passive Infrared Receiver (PIR) merupakan sebuah sensor yang biasa digunakan untuk mendeteksi keberadaan manusia[1]. Dengan pemasangan PIR terintegrasi dengan arduino, jika ada penghuni maka lampu menyala dan sebaliknya jika tidak ada penghuni maka lampu padam 3 menit setelah penghuni keluar dari ruang.
